Chapter Twenty
Leviâs voice was as soft as a caress. âIt hurts, I know, but you need to push past the pain. Keep fighting.â
Jordan tried to turn toward him. Her muscles screamed at her to stop moving.
âYou canât lie here forever,â Levi told her.
She closed her eyes and felt his fingertips brush against her arm. They left behind a trail of goose bumps.
âYou need to get up.â
The tingling sensation sharpened, pricking at her skin like needles. âThat hurts,â she moaned, turning her head from side to side. âWhy are you hurting me?â
âI want you to get up, now,â Levi urged. âOpen your eyes.â
The pain spread across her chest and made its way down her arms. Heâs right, she realized, struggling to stretch out her legs. If I donât get up now, I donât think Iâll be able to get up ever again.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she tried to get her body to move. Her limbs quivered from the strain. âI donât know if I can do this,â she whispered.
âYou know as well as I do that you have the strength to see this through.â She felt him brush the hair back from her face. âIf I could, I would take your place, but you donât need me. Do you?â
Yes. The word rested on the tip of her tongue. She wanted to tell him how much she missed him. How having him close enough to touch was a relief and a joy.
You need to stop, she told herself. You know you canât have him.
Not trusting herself to respond, she gritted her teeth and pushed herself up with her hands.
âThatâs my girl,â Levi murmured in her ear. She felt the lightest touch of his lips against her cheek before white light blinded her.

Jordan fell onto her side, wincing from what felt like bruised ribs. She lay there for a moment, waiting for her eyes to adjust. When they did, she struggled into a seated position. She did a quick internal check. Aside from the cramps in her legs, the rest of her body seemed to be in working order.
When she touched what was left of Agaresâs power, she let out a sigh of relief. There wasnât much left, but it was better than nothing.
The white room started to ring.
It took her a moment to realize that the sound came from her backpack. Bending and stretching in any direction was painful, which made it difficult to reach. Snagging a strap with one finger, she pulled it toward her and took out her cell. Tullyâs name lit up the screen.
âHello?â she rasped into the receiver.
âI hope itâs not too early to call?â The way Tully asked the question made it clear he didnât think it was. âI wanted to stop by after lunch to get your list of questions.â
Jordan squinted and braced her head against her hand. âFor what?â she finally asked.
âIâm headed to Rawridge today,â he said. âTwo p.m. with Greg, remember?â
âRight. Of course,â she said, and glanced at her phone. It was only ten after nine.
